Tal día como hoy, hacia el año 1608, nació en Amberes la pintora barroca flamenca Catarina Ykens I, de soltera Floquet.
A menudo es confundida con su sobrina, la pintora Catharina Ykens II (1659-1737).
Catarina Ykens-Floquet fue discípula e hija del pintor Lucas Floquet (1578-1635) y de su mujer Johanna Leeuwaerts (¿-1638). Otros tres hermanos suyos también fueron pintores: Lucas Floquet II (1605-c.1667), Simon Floquet (c.1609-c.1678) y Pauwel Floquet (c.1610-1667). Todos ellos se formaron en el taller paterno, donde Catarina conoció a su futuro marido, el pintor Frans Ykens (1601-1693). La hermana de Catarina, Anna Floquet (¿-1687) también se casó con otro pintor del taller, Pieter Tassaert (¿-1692), y tuvieron una hija que fue pintora: Maria Tassaert (1642-c.1665).
El 27 de febrero de 1635 Catarina Floquet contrajo matrimonio en Amberes con Frans Ykens, quien también fue discípulo de su tío político Osias Beert I (c.1580-1624).
Al igual que varios miembros de su familia, Catarina Ykens I se especializó en el género del bodegón floral, las vanitas y las guirnaldas de flores con frutos e insectos. Esta tradición artística familiar ha dificultado mucho las atribuciones de sus obras. Además, Catarina tuvo una hija que se dedicó a la pintura llamada también Catharina Ykens, lo cual dificulta aún más la identificación de los cuadros de estas tres pintoras llamadas igual.
La última obra fechada conocida de Catarina Ykens I está datada en 1665.
Al fallecer su marido en 1693, los documentos se refieren a ella como viuda, por lo que entendemos que murió después de esa fecha.
On this day, circa 1608, the Flemish Baroque painter Catarina Ykens I (née Floquet) was born in Antwerp.
She is frequently confused with her niece, the painter Catharina Ykens II (1659–1737). Catarina Ykens-Floquet was the daughter and pupil of the painter Lucas Floquet (1578–1635) and his wife Johanna Leeuwaerts (d. 1638). Three of her brothers were also painters: Lucas Floquet II (1605–c.1667), Simon Floquet (c.1609–c.1678), and Pauwel Floquet (c.1610–1667). They all trained in their father's workshop, where Catarina met her future husband, the painter Frans Ykens (1601–1693). Catarina's sister, Anna Floquet (d. 1687), also married another painter from the workshop, Pieter Tassaert (d. 1692); their daughter, Maria Tassaert (1642–c.1665), became a painter as well.
On 27 February 1635, Catarina Floquet married Frans Ykens in Antwerp, who had also been a pupil of his uncle-in-law, Osias Beert I (c.1580–1624).
Like several members of her family, Catarina Ykens I specialized in floral still lifes, vanitas, and flower garlands with fruits and insects. This shared family artistic tradition has made the attribution of her works highly challenging. Furthermore, Catarina had a daughter who also became a painter named Catharina Ykens, which complicates the identification of paintings among these three namesake artists even further.
The last known dated work by Catarina Ykens I is from 1665.
Upon her husband's death in 1693, documents refer to her as a widow, indicating that she passed away after this date.
