Tal día como hoy, el 17 de septiembre de 1790, nació en Gouda la pintora y grabadora neerlandesa Anna Kobell.
Perteneció a una familia de artistas de origen alemán. Fue hija y discípula del pintor y marchante holandés Jan Kobell I (1755-1833) junto con su hermano, el paisajista Jan Kobell III (1800-1838), y su tío Jan Baptist Kobell (1778-1814). Su abuelo, Hendrik Kobell (1751-1779), también fue un destacado grabador y pintor especializado en marinas que pudo trabajar en Londres y París.
Apenas existen datos documentales sobre Anna Kobell y dado que trabajó durante toda su vida en el taller familiar, también resulta muy complicada la atribución de sus obras.
Solía firmar sus trabajos con la letra inicial de su nombre de pila seguida de su apellido. Este dato hace que los conservadores no vean clara la letra“A” de su nombre y la confundan con una letra “J” del nombre de sus familiares masculinos.
Anna murió en Rotterdam a los 56 años el 7 de septiembre de 1847.
Sus escasas obras atribuidas se conservan en el Rijksmuseum de Ámsterdam, el Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen de Rotterdam y el Centraal Museum Utrecht.
On this day, 17 September, 1790, the Dutch painter and engraver Anna Kobell was born in Gouda.
She belonged to a prominent family of artists of German origin. She was the daughter and disciple of the Dutch painter and art dealer Jan Kobell I (1755-1833), training alongside her brother, the landscape painter Jan Kobell III (1800-1838), and her uncle Jan Baptist Kobell (1778-1814). Her grandfather, Hendrik Kobell (1751-1779), was also a notable marine artist and printmaker who worked in London and Paris.
Scant documentary evidence exists regarding Anna Kobell's life, and because she worked within the family workshop throughout her career, the attribution of her works remains highly complex.
She typically signed her pieces with her first initial followed by her surname. This practice has led curators to frequently misinterpret the letter "A" of her name, often confusing it with the letter "J" belonging to her male relatives.
Anna passed away in Rotterdam at the age of 56 on 7 September, 1847.
Her few attributed works are preserved today in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Centraal Museum Utrecht.
